What is Lutein and what is it good for?
The name “Lutein” derives from “lute”, the Latin for yellow and rightly so, since Lutein really is a yellow substance. In high concentrations its color deepens to a reddish hue.
Lutein, chemically speaking, is an anti-oxidant and occurs in particularly large quantities in the eye. Not in the visible portions, but in the fundus, the deepest part of the eyes. More precisely, in the area responsible for sharp vision and which is exposed to the powerful effects of massive, concentrated light. It is called the “yellow spot” because of the color Lutein lends it.
The integrity of the fundus, and most especially of the yellow spot, is vital for sharp vision. It seems like nature has wisely provided us with large amounts of Lutein and in this very area.
